Global Smartphone Market Reaches its Lowest Q3 Levels in a Decade; Apple’s Share at 16%

  • Global smartphone sell-through declined 8% YoY but grew 2% QoQ in Q3 2023.
  • Samsung led the market but declined YoY to reach its lowest quarterly level in the last decade.
  • A shorter period of iPhone 15 availability in Q3 led to a shift in demand to the next quarter.
  • The top five brands’ cumulative share declined in Q3 as challengers’ share grew.
  • HONOR, Huawei and Transsion Group were among the only top brands to record YoY growth

Global smartphone sell-through volumes fell 8% YoY in Q3 2023, the ninth consecutive quarter to record a decline, but grew 2% QoQ, according to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Market Pulse service. Volumes declined YoY largely due to slower than expected recovery in consumer demand. But the market’s QoQ growth, especially the positive performance in September despite one full week less of sales of the new iPhones, is likely a sign of positive news ahead.

Samsung continued to lead the global market, capturing a fifth of the total sales in Q3. The new generation of foldables received a mixed response, with the Flip 5 outselling its counterpart by nearly twice as much. However, Samsung’s A-series models remained market leaders in mid-price bands. Apple came in second with a 16% market share despite the limited availability of iPhone 15 series, which has been received well so far.

Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo rounded off the top five, with the three recording YoY declines. In Q3, all these brands worked towards strengthening their positions in key markets like China and India, while continuing to slow down expansionary efforts in overseas markets.

HONOR, Huawei and Transsion Group gained share and were among the only brands to record YoY growth in Q3. Huawei grew driven by the launch of the Mate 60 series in China, while HONOR’s growth was led by strong overseas performance. Transsion brands continued to expand while also benefiting from the recovery in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) market.

MEA was the only region to record YoY growth in Q3, owing to improvements in macroeconomic indicators. Most developed markets, like North America, Western Europe and South Korea, recorded steep declines. However, we expect most developed markets to grow in Q4 largely due to the delayed effect of the iPhone launch.

Following a strong September, we expect the momentum to continue till the year-end, beginning with the full impact of the iPhone 15 series along with the arrival of the festive season in India, followed by the 11.11 sales event in China and ending with the Christmas and end-of-year promotions across regions. In Q4 2023, we expect the market to halt its series of YoY declines.

However, the market is expected to decline for the full year of 2023, reaching its lowest level in the decade largely due to a shift in device replacement patterns, particularly in developed markets. Notably, the recovery of emerging markets before the global market and the growth of brands outside of the top five indicate the shifting dynamics and opportunities in the global smartphone market.

OPPO Find N3 Flip Review: Big Camera System Upgrade, Alert Slider and More

OPPO recently launched its second-generation flip phone, the Find N3 Flip. It comes with several refinements over last year’s popular Find N2 Flip. The aim is to bring the flip phone experience on par with that of flagship bar phones. There are three key areas where the OPPO Find N3 Flip brings improvements over its predecessor. Let us discuss them and everything else that is new and different in the Find N3 Flip.

Enhanced camera capabilities

The biggest upgrade coming to the Find N3 Flip is the Hasselblad-branded triple-camera system. While the camera resolution is the same as in the Find X6 Pro (review), there are a few changes though, especially in the sensor size and focal lengths of the telephoto camera. It has a 50MP (24mm) primary camera with f/1.8 aperture, 1/1.56-inch sensor size and 1.0um pixel size. It also includes OIS to let users capture blur-free photos and videos. The main camera is paired with a 32MP (47mm) telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom capabilities and a 48MP ultrawide (14mm) camera. This makes the Find N3 Flip the first flip foldable to feature triple cameras with high-resolution sensors.

Besides, the Find N3 Flip pioneers selfie capabilities, allowing users to capture great shots. The large cover screen provides a preview for framing the perfect shot, while the multi-angle hovering capability of the foldable enables different angles for selfies. It also comes with a new interval shooting function.

Pioneering large cover display

OPPO has pioneered the new-generation clamshell-type foldable with an unprecedentedly large cover display. In older-generation clamshell-type foldables such as the Z Flip, Z Flip3, Z Flip4, Huawei P50 Pocket and the Pocket S, the cover displays typically measured around 1 inch. However, OPPO started a trend with the Find N2 Flip, introducing a cover display as large as 3.26 inches. This trend has been swiftly embraced by other OEMs, including vivo, Motorola and Samsung. While these cover displays may appear small in today’s context, they are akin to the original iPhone’s 3.5-inch display. The significance lies in the ability of OEMs to leverage and enhance these cover displays, making them more practical and beneficial for consumers.

In the Find N3 Flip, the 3.26-inch vertical cover display remains the same in size but has more functionality than the first-generation Find N2 Flip. Users can access navigation, music and social networking apps, as well as smart key integration for select car brands. OPPO’s cover screen is said to have the most number of customized apps in the industry, such as WeChat, TikTok, Weibo, bilibili, Xiaohongshu, QQ music and Netease. In addition, OPPO has upgraded the animated 2D emojis to 3D, which can be used as cover display wallpapers.

Upgraded hardware

The Find N3 Flip is powered by MediaTek’s 4nm Dimensity 9200 chipset. The battery is still capped at 4,300mAh and supports the same 44W fast-charging speeds. The N3 Flip opens up to a 6.8-inch foldable LTPO AMOLED screen with a 120Hz dynamic refresh rate. The N3 Flip also passed the TÜV Rheinland Folding Endurance Test, registering a record-breaking 600,000 folds.

Colors and pricing

The Find N3 Flip comes in three colors – Rosy Pink, Mirror Black and Moonlight Gold. It features a popular three-stage alert slider used by OnePlus, making it easy to toggle between Ring, Silent and Vibrate modes. Along with the smartphone, OPPO is also offering stylish phone cases designed by famous local designers.

The pricing of the phone came as a surprise. The 256GB variant with 12GB RAM is priced at RMB 6,799 (around $934) and the 512GB variant with 12GB RAM is priced at RMB 7,599 (around $1,044). These prices are slightly higher than the N2 Flip’s launch price.

The Find N3 Flip is already on sale and is expected to launch in global markets in October. While the model has impressive upgrades compared to its first generation, its design and features seem to be geared toward a female audience, positioning it not just as a smartphone but also as a stylish accessory.

OPPO Group in Tough Battle to Defend its Italian Bastion

  • Italy’s smartphone sales fell 28% YoY in H1 2023 due to challenging macroeconomic conditions.
  • The OPPO group’s share in Italy’s smartphone market in H1 2023 was more than double its share in other major Western European countries.
  • However, the OPPO group’s market share in Italy declined compared to the previous year.

In the first half of 2023, Italy’s smartphone sales plummeted 28% YoY to below 5 million units. This was well above the average market contraction of 19% observed across Europe and marked the worst half-year performance of the Italian market since 2019.

The decline can be attributed to the high inflation prevailing in Italy since last year, which has significantly impacted consumer sentiment. Italy’s share in Western Europe’s smartphone market has also decreased. Other major countries in the region, like the UK, France and Germany, have seen relatively stable or increasing shares.

Source: Counterpoint Monthly Handset Tracker

Another difference between the smartphone markets of Italy and other major Western European countries is the significantly higher share held by the OPPO group (OPPO, OnePlus and realme) in Italy’s market. In the first half of 2023, the OPPO group’s share in the Italian smartphone market stood at around 11%, more than double its market share in the UK, France and Germany. This suggests that Italy is one of the markets in Western Europe where the OPPO group intends to focus its efforts, especially after its withdrawal from the German and French markets following a patent dispute with Nokia.

However, the OPPO group’s market share in Italy has declined compared to the previous year. In the first half of 2022, it held a market share of 17%, making it the top Chinese brand in the market. But in the first half of 2023, Xiaomi regained the top spot among Chinese brands after experiencing a 2% increase compared to 2022 and capturing a 16% market share. This shift can be attributed to the fact that in the Italian smartphone market, where the sub-$200 budget segment accounts for nearly half of the market, the OPPO group’s sales in this price range decreased by 40%, and it managed to feature only two models in the top-20 bestseller list. In contrast, Xiaomi achieved the opposite by aggressively promoting both online and offline channels, with a particular focus on its Redmi Note series. This resulted in seven of its models making it to the bestseller list within that price range.

Source: Counterpoint Monthly Handset Tracker

If this trend continues, the OPPO group’s position in Italy will become increasingly uncertain. Defending or growing market share in Italy is essential to offset the losses due to downsizing or withdrawal from other major Western European markets. Therefore, a strategy targeting both the sub-$200 budget segment and the gradually growing premium segment (>$600) simultaneously may be required.

The Italian National Institute of Statistics’ (ISTAT’s) recent prediction of a further slowdown in inflation over the coming months, along with an upward revision of the annual economic growth rate from the initial estimates, raises hopes of the Italian smartphone market avoiding further significant declines. Within this context, the sustainability of OPPO group’s position in Italy’s smartphone market is of particular interest.

Global Foldable Smartphone Shipments Up 10% YoY in Q2 2023, Set for Substantial Growth in 2024

  • Although overall global smartphone shipments declined in Q2 2023, global foldable shipments rose.
  • In H2 2023, competition in the global foldable product market is set to escalate significantly, driven by the earnest entry of Chinese companies like OPPO and HONOR.
  • The global foldable market is expected to experience substantial growth in 2024, driven by the introduction of entry-level foldable products.

The global foldable smartphone market increased 10% YoY in Q2 2023 to reach 2.1 million units, according to Counterpoint Research’s most recent global foldable smartphone tracker. This growth is in stark contrast to that of the global smartphone market, which showed a 9% decline in shipments during the quarter to reach 268 million units. Due to the prolonged Russia-Ukraine war and the ongoing high global inflation, the smartphone market is expected to grow sideways. Nevertheless, the foldable smartphone sector continues to exhibit robust and sustained growth.

The foldable smartphone landscape in the Chinese market presents a particularly intriguing scenario. During Q2 2023, shipments in the overall Chinese smartphone market slipped 4% YoY to reach 61.9 million units, hurt by the recent economic challenges faced by the country, which led to a reduction in consumer spending. However, the Chinese foldable smartphone market achieved notable success, surging 64% YoY to reach 1.2 million units. China now commands the largest share of the global foldable smartphone market, with a 58.6% share.

Foldable Product Launch Status in 2023: Comparison of Global and Chinese Foldable Markets

Foldable Product Launch Status in 2023 Comparison of Global and Chinese Foldable Markets
Source: Global Foldable Smartphone Insight Report

The rapid growth of the Chinese foldable market is primarily attributed to the introduction of foldable products tailored for the Chinese market, coupled with a strong demand for these products among Chinese consumers. In Q2 2023, significant momentum is building for the continued growth of the foldable market. This surge was driven by the introduction of key products such as the Huawei Mate X3, vivo X Fold 2, and vivo X Flip, primarily targeting the Chinese foldable market. Additionally, the global (including China) launch of the Motorola Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra, further contributed to this growth trend. In Q2 2023, China saw the launch of five new foldable products tailored for its market, while the global market outside China only saw two foldable product launches during the same period.

Counterpoint Research Senior Analyst Jene Park said, “We believe that these frequent product launches (along with the marketing effects that accompany product launches) are changing Chinese consumers’ perception of foldable products. Consequently, Chinese consumers can access a variety of foldable products more easily and frequently than any other market in the world. The continuous release of various foldable products is recognized as one of the important reasons why the Chinese foldable market has continued to grow significantly compared to other markets.”

Global Foldable Smartphone Forecast, 2023-2024

Source: Global foldable smartphone forecast

The global foldable smartphone market will undergo significant changes in H2 2023. Chinese manufacturers are expanding their presence internationally during this period, with notable releases including the HONOR Magic V2, OPPO Find N3 Flip, and the yet-to-be-named OnePlus foldable device. Notably, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5, considered to be some of the top-tier foldable offerings, were launched in August and are expected to capture a substantial market share in H2 2023.

Park added, “The global foldable smartphone market is set to see significant growth in the H2 2023, driven by the expansion of Chinese manufacturers. Although Samsung’s market share may dip due to increased competition, we believe that it will be a natural result. However, competition among manufacturers usually has the effect of increasing the size of the market for the product. We believe that the era of the mass foldable phone is expected to start in 2024, mainly led by Samsung and Huawei with their entry-level foldables. Entry-level foldables are expected to be priced around $600 to $700, making them more accessible to consumers.”

4G Smartphones Dominate Mexico’s Q2 2023 Bestsellers List

  • Samsung dominated with five models on the list.
  • Apple’s iPhone 11 was the third best-selling model in Mexico in Q2 2023.
  • 60% of the models in the top 10 list were priced below $150.
  • Samsung’s Galaxy A34, Galaxy A54 5G were the only two 5G models on the top 10 list.

Mexico is the second most important smartphone market in Latin America.  The country has the second-highest population in the region and hosts an extremely competitive ecosystem. Mexico’s geographical size and lack of import barriers make it an extremely attractive smartphone market.

The top-selling models accounted for 35% of Mexico’s total smartphone market in Q2 2023. The top 10 list almost appears like Samsung’s performance for the quarter as the brand dominated the top-selling chart in Mexico in Q2 2023. Five of the 10 best-selling models were from Samsung. According to Counterpoint’s Market Pulse Report, Samsung’s share in Q2 2023 was slightly more than 30%.

OPPO and Motorola both had two models in the Q2 2023 top-selling list. Motorola, which has always been a strong player in the Mexican market, launched a few new models during the quarter that helped the brand increase its market share. OPPO, a relatively new entrant in the LATAM market, managed to retain its third position in market share with two of its models in the top-selling list.

Source: Counterpoint Research Market Pulse, Q2 2023

60% of the models in the top 10 list were priced below $150. This price band accounts for 52% of the overall smartphone market in Mexico. However, premiumization is infiltrating the Mexican market, and the number of models in the >$150 band is increasing in the top-selling list. This trend is accelerating slowly but will surely lead to a higher overall smartphone ASP.

Apple’s four-year-old iPhone 11 has been part of the Mexican bestseller list for a few quarters now. It was the third best-selling model in the Mexican market in Q2 2023. The iPhone 11, which is a 4G model, was the most expensive model on the list. The massive sales of this model reflect the strength of Apple’s branding.

The 4G version of OPPO’s Reno 7 was another model in the bestsellers list priced more than $150. This is quite an achievement for the brand, which arrived in the region just three years ago. OPPO is still building its branding in the Mexican market. The Reno 7 has been in the Mexican top-selling chart since December 2022.

It is noteworthy that only two models in the chart are 5G phones – the Samsung Galaxy A34 and the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G. The latter one is also the most expensive Samsung model in the top-selling list. Meanwhile, Telcel has been pushing its subscriber base to replace their phone with a 5G one. Mexican consumers are still not ready for 5G technology.  They would rather get more specs than access the technology.

MEA Smartphone Shipments Rebound in Q2 2023 on Better Macroeconomic Environment

  • MEA smartphone shipments increased 1% YoY and 7% QoQ in Q2 2023.
  • Consumer sentiment picked up during the quarter with falling inflation rates and stabilizing local currencies. These boosted demand for ‘big ticket’ items like smartphones.
  • Samsung saw a rebound in its shipments and market share during the quarter.
  • Transsion Group’s shipments grew 2% YoY, or an impressive 14% QoQ, in a typically weak quarter.
  • Apple continued its steep rise, with shipments up 75% YoY in Q2.

London, Boston, Toronto, New Delhi, Hong Kong, Beijing, Taipei, Seoul – September 5, 2023

Smartphone shipments in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region increased 1% YoY and 7% QoQ in Q2 2023, according to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Market Monitor Service. This was the MEA smartphone market’s first meaningful rebound in five quarters, or since the global inflation crisis started. Consumer sentiment improved materially during the quarter, as inflation rates fell and local currencies stabilized. This came as a welcome relief for embattled OEMs, which had been sitting on an alarming level of inventory in 2022. They utilized the opportunity to destock and return to a more normal pattern of inventory and product launches.

Commenting on the market’s performance, Senior Analyst Yang Wang said, “The MEA region seems to be the first to come out of the global downturn in the smartphone market. Market activity picked up during the quarter on better macroeconomic environment and consumers could afford to be more optimistic about ‘big ticket’ item purchases. This was reflected in robust Ramadan and Easter sales and throughout the quarter. The encouraging performances show once again that the MEA region could be the last remaining untapped smartphone market. There is still significant potential for large segments of the population to upgrade to smartphones.”MEA smartphone shipments market shareLooking at individual brands, Samsung, TECNO and Apple were the biggest winners. Samsung’s rebound can be attributed to the lower-priced Galaxy A series’ strong sales, while new 5G and premium-end models also did well. TECNO, and sister brand Infinix to some extent, performed very well due to better economic conditions, particularly for lower income groups, and aggressive market entries in the Middle East. TECNO and Infinix’s successes, however, can be partly attributed to the cannibalization of itel’s market share. Lastly, Apple had an outstanding quarter to round off a very strong iPhone 14 series cycle. The OEM managed to increase penetration in key Middle East markets with the higher-priced Pro and Pro Max models getting good reception.

On the other hand, Xiaomi retreated 17% YoY as it faced strong competition from Samsung and Transsion brands in the mid-range. Outside of the top 10, OPPO and vivo continued to slide as the availability of the brands’ stock contracted and market penetration activities shrank. However, realme maintained positive momentum due to increasing product availability in new markets.

Commenting on pricing trends in the MEA smartphone market, Wang said, “The premium end is usually an afterthought for the MEA market, but the segment was an outperformer of Q2 2023. The sales of smartphones priced above $800 grew 93% YoY, largely due to Apple’s high-end models in the iPhone 14 series. The OEM’s share increased in key GCC markets, while it was seen making efforts to expand distribution channels in Africa. Apple’s success in the MEA region is another proof of the brand’s strong global appeal. As the process of urbanization and industrialization continues across the region, Apple can expect to remain one of the top OEMs in the region.”

Europe’s Q2 2023 Smartphone Shipments Hit 11-year Low

  • Europe smartphone shipments fell 12% YoY in Q2 2023 to reach lowest since 2012.
  • Russia only major market to register growth at 4% YoY.
  • OPPO’s shipments fell 51% YoY hurt by patent issues and difficult market conditions.
  • 2023 smartphone shipments are set to be lower than in 2022.

London, Boston, Toronto, New Delhi, Jakarta, Beijing, Taipei, Seoul – September 1, 2023

European smartphone shipments declined 12% YoY in Q2 2023, marking the lowest quarterly shipment volume since Q1 2012, according to the latest report from Counterpoint Research’s Market Monitor Service.

Western Europe declined by 14% YoY during the quarter while Eastern Europe limited its fall to 8% YoY, despite being in an already battered state. All major European nations performed weakly in Q2 2023, except Russia, which conversely registered 4% YoY growth. However, this was primarily due to lower shipments in Q2 2022 – the first full quarter after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the resulting sanctions and market exits of prominent smartphone players.

Europe-Smartphone-Market-Q2-2023

OPPO had a difficult time in Q2 2023 with patent disputes and uncertainty in several countries, due to which the brand’s shipments dropped 51% YoY. The uncertainty is likely to persist which will result in further shipment declines in the coming quarters.

realme grew 12% YoY, driven primarily by Russia, which accounted for 55% of the brand’s shipments in the region. In Russia, realme benefitted from Samsung and Apple’s market exit, which allowed the company to fill the void left by these heavyweights. Additionally, realme has remained in the second position in Russia for five straight quarters and has been closing the gap with the market leader Xiaomi.

HONOR registered 9% YoY growth during the quarter due to the base effect and its ongoing expansion outside China.

Commenting on the current market dynamics, Research Analyst Harshit Rastogi said, “Despite falling shipment volumes, the higher price bands (wholesale prices exceeding $600) have been capturing a larger share of the market each year. They also have a longer replacement cycle compared to mid-segment and lower-price band smartphones, which further dampens demand. Consequently, OEMs are likely to focus on increasing their ASP and concentrate on services to drive revenue growth in the coming quarters.”

Europe-Smartphone-Market-Q2-2023

Commenting on market outlook, Associate Director Jan Stryjak commented, “The market is unlikely to make a full recovery `this year and 2023 smartphone shipments are set to be lower than in 2022, marking consecutive decade-low shipments in both 2022 and 2023. While the economic conditions are partly to blame, consumer buying behaviour is also changing, suggesting that a lower level of sales will set a new baseline. However, despite the low shipment volumes, upcoming iterations of Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s foldables are likely to fare well, prompting a bump in sales volumes in the coming quarters.”

China Smartwatch Shipments Rise 5% YoY in Q2 2023

  • China’s smartwatch shipments rose 5% YoY in Q2 2023 to mark the market’s gradual recovery.
  • Huawei remained the best-selling brand with a 39% market share.
  • imoo (BBK) surpassed Apple to rank second in market share.
  • The $500 price band’s share increased significantly, while the ≤$50 price band’s share decreased significantly.

Beijing, New Delhi, Seoul, Hong Kong, London, Buenos Aires, San Diego – August 30, 2023

Marking a gradual recovery in Q2 2023, China’s smartwatch shipments increased 5% YoY, according to Counterpoint Research’s latest Global Smartwatch Model Tracker.

Senior Analyst Shenghao Bai said, “The YoY rise in Q2 came on a low base of the same period last year. At the same time, the holiday travel in Q2 and the 618 e-commerce festival also boosted consumer demand for smartwatches. The market has recovered slightly better than we had predicted.”

Note: Figures may not add up to 100% due to rounding

Market summary

Huawei recorded a 58% YoY growth, maintaining its good reputation among consumers. The newly launched Huawei Watch 4 and Huawei Watch 4 Pro series models were popular with consumers, while old models such as the Huawei Watch GT 3 series still sold well. Another newly launched model, the Huawei Watch Ultimate, contributed to the brand’s performance in the ultra-premium segment.

imoo (BBK) benefited from the demand in the first full back-to-school quarter after the pandemic lockdown was lifted in China. Its multiple offline retail stores also contributed to the brand’s growth.

Apple recorded a 15% YoY decrease in Q2 2023. Although the Apple Watch Series 8 was the best-selling model family in China during the quarter, its shipments decreased 25% compared to that of its predecessor Apple Watch Series 7 in Q2 2022. With new product launches expected in Q3 2023, Apple is likely to increase its market share in the quarter.

Xiaomi recorded a decrease of 15% YoY but an increase of 7% QoQ. The brand still took the biggest share in the ≤$50 segment. Waning consumer interest in entry-level products contributed to the decline in Xiaomi’s market share.

OPPO achieved a 28% YoY increase in Q2 2023. Promotions during the 618 e-commerce festival helped the OPPO Watch 3 and OPPO Watch 3 Pro’s sales.

Source: Counterpoint’s Global Smartwatch Model Tracker

Note: The price refers to the wholesale price

In terms of wholesale price bands, the ≤$50 band’s share significantly dropped compared to the same period last year. This price band’s share has been recording YoY drops in the past several quarters. On the other hand, the ≥$500 segment’s share rose significantly to 11% from almost negligible in Q2 2022.

Research Analyst Alicia Gong said, “The entry-level products with simple features are not as popular with consumers as they once were. A growing number of consumers are gravitating toward smarter devices with more health monitoring, sports tracking and guidance functions. Since the Apple Watch Ultra’s release last year, the share of premium segments has been growing. The promotions during the 618 e-commerce festival also contributed to these segments’ growth.”
