Early Look iPhone Numbers Show Waning China vs Vibrant US

  • iPhone 15 series first 17 days unit sales in China down 4.5% compared to iPhone 14
  • Excluding the Plus, which was released three weeks late last year, sales declines exceeded 10%
  • Early US numbers show opposite trend with robust demand across all models, especially Pro Max

Beijing, Hong Kong, London, New Delhi, Boston, Seoul – October 17, 2023

iPhone 15 series unit sales for the first 17 days of sales in China is underperforming last year’s iPhone 14, according to preliminary data from Counterpoint Research’s Smartphone 360 Weekly Smartphone Sales Tracker. The data is in contrast to early US numbers coming in which reflect robust demand across all models, especially the Pro Max.

“China’s headline numbers for the 15 series are in the red, and this is a reflection of the broader decline in consumer spending,” says Mengmeng Zhang. “But the shorter pre-holiday shopping period coupled with supply mismatches on the Pro Max (with consumers shying away from blue) could push some of the demand to calendar Q4.”

Source:  Counterpoint Research Smartphone 360 Weekly Tracker, China.

Early US numbers are in stark contrast to China, with the first 9 days of iPhone 15 sales showing double-digit increases in overall unit sales and healthy demand across Base, Pro and especially Pro Max models.

The US is hot right now with back-to-back stellar weekends for the new iPhone. Overall reception of the 15 series has been very positive and we’re expecting a major upgrade cycle from iPhone 11 and 12 users,” says Jeff Fieldhack, Research Director for North America. “Of course, we’re talking about the first couple weeks of sales, but it’s a positive sign and takes a lot of sting off the China numbers.”

Global Smartphone Market Reaches its Lowest Q3 Levels in a Decade; Apple’s Share at 16%

  • Global smartphone sell-through declined 8% YoY but grew 2% QoQ in Q3 2023.
  • Samsung led the market but declined YoY to reach its lowest quarterly level in the last decade.
  • A shorter period of iPhone 15 availability in Q3 led to a shift in demand to the next quarter.
  • The top five brands’ cumulative share declined in Q3 as challengers’ share grew.
  • HONOR, Huawei and Transsion Group were among the only top brands to record YoY growth

Global smartphone sell-through volumes fell 8% YoY in Q3 2023, the ninth consecutive quarter to record a decline, but grew 2% QoQ, according to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Market Pulse service. Volumes declined YoY largely due to slower than expected recovery in consumer demand. But the market’s QoQ growth, especially the positive performance in September despite one full week less of sales of the new iPhones, is likely a sign of positive news ahead.

Samsung continued to lead the global market, capturing a fifth of the total sales in Q3. The new generation of foldables received a mixed response, with the Flip 5 outselling its counterpart by nearly twice as much. However, Samsung’s A-series models remained market leaders in mid-price bands. Apple came in second with a 16% market share despite the limited availability of iPhone 15 series, which has been received well so far.

Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo rounded off the top five, with the three recording YoY declines. In Q3, all these brands worked towards strengthening their positions in key markets like China and India, while continuing to slow down expansionary efforts in overseas markets.

HONOR, Huawei and Transsion Group gained share and were among the only brands to record YoY growth in Q3. Huawei grew driven by the launch of the Mate 60 series in China, while HONOR’s growth was led by strong overseas performance. Transsion brands continued to expand while also benefiting from the recovery in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) market.

MEA was the only region to record YoY growth in Q3, owing to improvements in macroeconomic indicators. Most developed markets, like North America, Western Europe and South Korea, recorded steep declines. However, we expect most developed markets to grow in Q4 largely due to the delayed effect of the iPhone launch.

Following a strong September, we expect the momentum to continue till the year-end, beginning with the full impact of the iPhone 15 series along with the arrival of the festive season in India, followed by the 11.11 sales event in China and ending with the Christmas and end-of-year promotions across regions. In Q4 2023, we expect the market to halt its series of YoY declines.

However, the market is expected to decline for the full year of 2023, reaching its lowest level in the decade largely due to a shift in device replacement patterns, particularly in developed markets. Notably, the recovery of emerging markets before the global market and the growth of brands outside of the top five indicate the shifting dynamics and opportunities in the global smartphone market.

Software Announcements Take Center Stage at Google Pixel 8 Series Launch Event

  • Google’s latest smartphones hop aboard the AI train with impressive new differentiating features like Best Take.
  • Google announced seven years of OS updates and security patches, making it the market leader among major brands.
  • The Pixel Watch 2 packs upgraded hardware and tighter integration with Fitbit.

Google-Pixel -8-vs-Pixel-7-specs

On October 4, Google announced its latest smartphone lineup, the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, along with the new Pixel Watch 2. While the devices featured modest hardware upgrades, the major announcements from the event centered around Google’s new AI features and its extended support for devices, both of which could have major ripple effects on the smartphone market. Here are some of the takeaways from the Google event:

  • One of the biggest announcements of the event was Google’s new device support plan where it will offer seven years of OS updates, security patches, and AI feature drops. Previously, Google only offered them for three years. This is the longest duration of device support offered by a major smartphone OEM and will likely push competitors to offer even longer device support. This will be a huge benefit for the refurbished market, giving these devices an even longer life cycle on the software front. It could also be a huge opportunity for the US prepaid market where Apple has seen great success in 2023 through promotions on devices as old as the iPhone 11, which are still relevant due to their software support. Google could follow suit by offering older Pixel devices at a steep discount to prepaid consumers.
  • Google’s latest suite of AI-powered features could be a major differentiator for its devices. Google announced new features such as Best Take, Magic Editor, Audio Eraser and Assistant with Bard, which allow users to get the best photo every time, delete unwanted background noise in audio recordings, and have an intelligent assistant that can summarize a user’s inbox, write them a grocery list, and respond intelligently to text messages. These features are significant innovations that will improve the user experience and potentially draw more consumers to Pixel devices. However, it should be noted that Google has made some of its AI features, such as Magic Eraser, available to Google One members regardless of OS, which could dampen its ability to draw users to Pixel devices. In fact, Google has already announced that Assistant with Bard will be available to iPhone users with Google One memberships later this year.
  • Google announced that the Pixel 8 Pro will feature a temperature sensor that can be used to measure the temperature of baby feeding bottles, pans while cooking, and even body temperature, pending FDA approval. Is a thermometer app going to be the factor that convinces a Samsung Galaxy or iPhone user to leave their ecosystem and purchase a Pixel 8 Pro? Probably not. Is it a useful feature? Absolutely.
  • The rest of the hardware upgrades on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are incremental. The new smartphones feature Google’s latest Tensor G3 chipset, which is even more efficient in running machine learning models on the devices. The upgraded camera systems are even better at taking low-light photos and videos, building on Google’s camera prowess. Google has also launched a 1TB version of the Pixel 8 Pro for power users. Peak display brightness has also been improved, with the Pixel 8 Pro reaching up to 2400 nits of brightness and the Pixel 8 reaching 2000 nits, which should improve the user experience on sunny days. Decent improvements but nothing revolutionary. The same can be said about the overall design of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro – no major changes. Consumers may be disappointed in the $100 increase for both models over the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro due to the modest hardware upgrades, but the software upgrades more than justify the increase.
  • The Pixel Watch 2 features some major hardware upgrades over the original Pixel Watch including Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 SoC, bringing improved performance and power efficiency that allows users to wear their device all day and all night on a single charge, even with the always-on display. Google also upgraded its heart rate sensor, which uses multiple LEDs over a wider area of a user’s wrist, producing a heart rate reading that is up to 40% more accurate.
  • The Pixel Watch 2 comes with even more wellness and safety features. The Pixel Watch 2 is more tightly integrated with Fitbit, helping not only to improve the new smartwatch’s health-tracking algorithms but also to provide new features like Body Response, which can point to signs of stress based on heart rate, heart rate variability and skin temperature. It can even suggest remedies like guided breathing.
Additionally, the Pixel Watch 2 brings new safety features like Medical ID and Safety Check. Medical ID allows users to display medical info on their watch and share it with emergency responders during calls, helping convey vital information during emergencies. Safety Check lets users choose an activity and when they expect it to be done. Once the activity is complete and the user has not checked back in, the Pixel Watch 2 will automatically send the user’s location to their contacts on Google Maps, letting them know where their friend or loved one is.

New Delhi, Buenos Aires, Denver, London, Hong Kong, Beijing, Seoul – October 5, 2023

Of Indian consumers planning to purchase a smartphone this festive season, 31% mention upgrading to the latest technology as the key reason for the purchase according to a survey conducted by Counterpoint Research.

For 18% of respondents, 5G is the top specification to consider, followed by the latest processor (14%) and RAM (9%).  In terms of budget, 42% plan to purchase a premium smartphone (INR 30,000 or ~$360 and above). And with respect to channel preference, up to 86% could purchase via online, with Amazon as the top preferred platform.

Conducted in October among consumers in India planning to buy a smartphone this festive season, the survey covers topics like key reasons for making the purchase, brand preference, preferred price point, desired specifications and offers. Further, future preferences combined with the current smartphone purchase journey provide insights into consumers’ switching pattern or loyalty towards brands and purchase channels.

Key Takeaways from India Pre-festive Season Smartphone Consumer Survey

An infographic highlighting the takeaways from India pre-festive season smartphone consumer survey.

Commenting on the festive season smartphone demand, Senior Analyst Arushi Chawla said, “Many people time their purchases with the festive season keeping in mind the auspiciousness of the occasion and also the competitive offers during the period. With the smartphone becoming the most important electronic gadget, consumers are cautious about its quality and features. That is why they consult multiple sources before making the purchase while increasingly opting for premium smartphones.”

When asked about the top preferred smartphone brand, Samsung was at the top with 33%, followed by Apple (18%), Xiaomi (11%) and OnePlus (10%). In terms of purchase channel preference, 40% prefer to purchase smartphones online, whereas 46% are comfortable taking either of the two routes. Among these 86% of respondents considering the online route, Amazon is the top preferred online channel for 48%, followed by Flipkart with 41%. The top five reasons for people to prefer Amazon are attractive offers, availability of top brands, availability of latest devices, delivery speed and reliable delivery.

Commenting on smartphone purchase preferences, Research Director Tarun Pathak said, “Consumers want the latest technology not only to experience it but also to meet their increasing requirements. This is reflected in our survey where 5G emerged as the top specification desired by consumers. 5G will continue to push smartphone demand in the coming years. Its presence has now reached lower price bands (<INR 10,000 or ~$120). Further, it is interesting to see that 20% of the respondents prefer switching to online platforms from offline modes, with the top reason for 43% of this segment being the availability of the latest devices. During the festive season, the OEMs and platforms aim to attract buyers with competitive offers. We expect this festive season to be better than the last year.”

The survey also finds that 22% of the respondents consider cashbacks/rewards as their top preferred offer when making the smartphone purchase. This is followed by bank offers (21%) and no-cost EMI (16%). And when it comes to the most preferred no-cost EMI tenure, six months is preferred by one-third of the respondents.

Disclaimer

This survey was commissioned by Amazon India to understand people’s smartphone purchase preferences this festive season. Counterpoint Research conducted this survey in Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities to capture a sample size of more than 1,200 respondents. An online survey was performed to collect quantitative insights from those respondents in the 18-35 age group who plan to purchase a smartphone this festive season. We expect the results to have a statistical precision of +/- 4%.

Smartphone ODM Shipments Decline Only 6% YoY in H1 Amid Overall Market’s 12% YoY Fall

  • Global ODM (including IDH) smartphone shipments fell 6% YoY in H1 2023 due to the macro headwinds after COVID-19.
  • Outsourced design shipments decreased in H1 2023 but their share increased when compared to the same period last year.
  • The top six ODMs took 95% share of the total ODM shipments.

Beijing, New Delhi, Hong Kong, Taipei, Seoul, San Diego, Buenos Aires, London – October 03, 2023

Smartphone shipments from Original Design Manufacturers/Independent Design Houses (ODMs/IDHs) declined 6% YoY in H1 2023, according to Counterpoint Research’s latest Global Smartphone ODM Report and Tracker.

Senior Research Analyst Shenghao Bai said, “The YoY decline in ODM/IDH companies’ H1 2023 shipments was driven by Samsung, Xiaomi and Lenovo Group’s weak performance. However, vivo, HONOR and Transsion Group’s rise offset part of the decline.”

Huaqin, Longcheer and Wingtech continued to dominate the competitive landscape of the global smartphone ODM/IDH industry in H1 2023. The companies, also known as the ‘Big 3,’ accounted for 76% of the global ODM/IDH smartphone market in the first half of 2023.

Commenting on the leading ODMs’ performance, Senior Research Analyst Ivan Lam said, “The ‘Big 3’ witnessed declines in the first half. Huaqin experienced a relatively smaller decrease and took the leading position. Longcheer’s shipments were impacted by Xiaomi’s performance but eased by the soaring orders from vivo. Wingtech saw similar declines as Longcheer but still received modest orders from Samsung, Xiaomi and OPPO Group.”

Bai added, “In Tier 2 ODMs, Tinno’s shipments continued to grow steadily due to its loyal client base of major carriers and local kings. Transsion Group’s good performance has been bringing a concrete boost to MobiWire and Innovatech, which have collaborated with the group for years. Their product offerings and supply chains are giving the group cost and quality advantages in its major target markets.”

Commenting on global manufacturing trends, Lam said, “India is now the second-biggest manufacturing hub for mobile phones due to heavy investment from OEMs, ODMs, and companies dealing in components and parts. India is expected to export about 22% of its total assembled mobile phones in 2023. However, China’s manufacturing and supply chain will still maintain its essential role in the longer run.”

OPPO Group in Tough Battle to Defend its Italian Bastion

  • Italy’s smartphone sales fell 28% YoY in H1 2023 due to challenging macroeconomic conditions.
  • The OPPO group’s share in Italy’s smartphone market in H1 2023 was more than double its share in other major Western European countries.
  • However, the OPPO group’s market share in Italy declined compared to the previous year.

In the first half of 2023, Italy’s smartphone sales plummeted 28% YoY to below 5 million units. This was well above the average market contraction of 19% observed across Europe and marked the worst half-year performance of the Italian market since 2019.

The decline can be attributed to the high inflation prevailing in Italy since last year, which has significantly impacted consumer sentiment. Italy’s share in Western Europe’s smartphone market has also decreased. Other major countries in the region, like the UK, France and Germany, have seen relatively stable or increasing shares.

Source: Counterpoint Monthly Handset Tracker

Another difference between the smartphone markets of Italy and other major Western European countries is the significantly higher share held by the OPPO group (OPPO, OnePlus and realme) in Italy’s market. In the first half of 2023, the OPPO group’s share in the Italian smartphone market stood at around 11%, more than double its market share in the UK, France and Germany. This suggests that Italy is one of the markets in Western Europe where the OPPO group intends to focus its efforts, especially after its withdrawal from the German and French markets following a patent dispute with Nokia.

However, the OPPO group’s market share in Italy has declined compared to the previous year. In the first half of 2022, it held a market share of 17%, making it the top Chinese brand in the market. But in the first half of 2023, Xiaomi regained the top spot among Chinese brands after experiencing a 2% increase compared to 2022 and capturing a 16% market share. This shift can be attributed to the fact that in the Italian smartphone market, where the sub-$200 budget segment accounts for nearly half of the market, the OPPO group’s sales in this price range decreased by 40%, and it managed to feature only two models in the top-20 bestseller list. In contrast, Xiaomi achieved the opposite by aggressively promoting both online and offline channels, with a particular focus on its Redmi Note series. This resulted in seven of its models making it to the bestseller list within that price range.

If this trend continues, the OPPO group’s position in Italy will become increasingly uncertain. Defending or growing market share in Italy is essential to offset the losses due to downsizing or withdrawal from other major Western European markets. Therefore, a strategy targeting both the sub-$200 budget segment and the gradually growing premium segment (>$600) simultaneously may be required.

The Italian National Institute of Statistics’ (ISTAT’s) recent prediction of a further slowdown in inflation over the coming months, along with an upward revision of the annual economic growth rate from the initial estimates, raises hopes of the Italian smartphone market avoiding further significant declines. Within this context, the sustainability of OPPO group’s position in Italy’s smartphone market is of particular interest.

Longer Waits This Year for Buyers of iPhone 15 Base and Pro Max

  • Pre-order delivery wait times for iPhone 15 base and Pro Max models significantly higher than previous generation
  • High demand coupled with initial supply constraints likely factors driving Pro Max’s delivery times to record high during pre-order week
  • iPhone 15 base model also seeing high wait times; China at 4X that of iPhone 14.

Boston, Seoul, Beijing, New Delhi, London – September 25, 2023

Delivery times on pre-orders for the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro Max came in significantly higher than corresponding iPhone 14 models across key markets, according to Counterpoint Research’s Apple 360 Service. The US was a prime example, with buyers of the base and top-end model having to wait 4 and 9 days longer, respectively, than those last year; Plus and Pro buyers will receive their devices up to two weeks faster.

*iPhone 15: Sep 15 – 21, 2023 and iPhone 14: Sep 9 – 15, 2022; excludes weekends.

“I don’t think it’s a big surprise the Pro Max is showing longer wait times than its predecessor,” says Senior Analyst, Manufacturing, Ivan Lam. “It’s normal to experience hiccups when you’ve got significant upgrades on complex mechanisms like the camera module.  But looking at wait times this weekend as the product starts selling in stores, it looks like availability is moving in the right direction and normalizing.”

Commenting on the iPhone 15, Jeff Fieldhack, Research Director for North America, notes, “The introduction of premium features like Dynamic Island previously exclusive to the Pro lineup has really increased its appeal to the general consumer base. It’s basically an iPhone 14 Pro at base level price and paired with the new aesthetic updates has created more incentives for users to upgrade this year.”

In the run up to Friday’s general release, the base model saw stronger than expected wait times in China, where domestic competitors are jostling to grab share in the premium segment which has been relatively unaffected by the overall market malaise. Most notable has been the rise and popularity of flip-style foldables as well as Huawei’s much anticipated launch of its Mate 60 Pro, which some are seeing as a direct competitor to the iPhone.

“What’s a bit surprising are the base model iPhone 15 wait times in China, which were 4X more than last year on launch day. We were expecting them to come in a lot lower – maybe on par with last year – based on all the discounting we saw on the 14 series during H1,” reflects Archie Zhang, Research Analyst, China. “But it could just be a sign Apple’s still ramping up supply as we move into the busiest quarter.”

“And as far as ultra-premium is concerned, the Pro Max is still the most coveted iPhone in China with long delivery wait times reflecting this,” adds Zhang. “But they’re similar to last year at the moment, and with scalper premiums way down, it could be a combination of less appetite for impulse buying amongst consumers and a similar demand-supply profile as last year.”
